Making the Most of Your Coworking Space

What makes working in a coworking space different from working in a coffee shop or from home?  Well, nothing.  Nothing, that is, if you don’t take advantage of all the great opportunities coworking provides.  Coworking spaces provide the opportunity to expand your network, grow your business, and learn new skills if you use them wisely.  How do you do that, you ask?  Read on:

 1. Talk to people

One of the biggest benefits of working in a coworking space is the fact that you’re surrounded by other creative, entrepreneurial people.  You never know what collaborations could arise if you introduce yourself.  A sense of community is often what draws people to coworking, and this can only be fostered if you’re willing to interact with others who use the space.

Obviously, there's a time and a place for striking up a conversation, but it doesn't hurt to get to know the folks who you share the space with.  Aside from just making friends (which is always a good thing), you'll be growing your network should you need help with a new project or finding more clients.

2. Come at least a few times a week

A coworking space is only beneficial if you actually use it.  Even if you don’t work there every day, coming a few times a week is a good way to stay connected with what’s happening in the space and get some work done free of distractions.  It will also help in forming those connections with other members that can take a coworking space from good to great.

3. Attend events

Most coworking spaces host or participate in local entrepreneurial and freelance-related events.  Find out what events your coworking space will be a part of and make it a point to attend at least one.  If your coworking space doesn't host events itself, chances are they will know of some in your area (and might even have some free tickets).  Meetups and other events not only help you learn something new - they also act as a great place to network.

4. Connect online

To make sure you're staying in the loop on all the happenings at your coworking space, join their Slack group or online forum.  You'll find helpful updates, like when food trucks will be stopping by, event information, or when the printer is out of ink, and can stay connected with fellow members.
